Need suggestion for an audio recorder for this device.

is designed to save and load its settings via a cassette recorder. What is the best choice for a replacement recorder for this.

the unit is the pepperl fuchs fc-21-v cam switch.

It’s almost certainly equivalent to what a Commodore 64, BBC Micro, etc pull have used. I have zero experience with cassette based home computers, so I can’t make any recommendations, but maybe see what people use for those now. The only issue I can think of at all is whether the audio output from the machine to the recorder is mike-level or line-level.

In the manual it indicates to use the mic level input but I made measurement and test recording it's pretty much line level. I have used a real cassette recorder, a laptop with sound card, the old Iphone with 3.5mm phone for mic and headphones. They all works but I need to find something that can easily be used by inexperienced user.
Handheld digital recorder works to certain extend but I run in to a number of problem.
1. The interface of these devices is kind of difficult to maneuver. I need to set the recording level manually and fixed. Most of those default to auto.
2. It's relatively difficult to name and locate tracks for different machines.
3. The input and output are 2 channel stereo. I need to make up cable to operate them in 1 channel mono.
4. The output seems a little low and the machine won't read correctly with low input.
