New Siglent 1104X-E, wondering about some setup things...
« on: December 28, 2022, 08:29:39 pm »
I'm new to scopes, and new to this Siglent 1104X-E. I read the paper manual which is extremely brief, so have a few additional questions:

1. Other than performing the power test as described in the booklet, what else should I do to prepare/calibrate/setup the scope for use?  (There are at least 2 "Setup" buttons and possibly more in the soft menu.)  Is there a Youtube video or checklist available to walk me through this?
2. The additional hardware options for this scope are fairly spendy.  Are there alternative sources for say the MSO probe?
3. Likewise, are other Chinese makers of current and other probes just as good as the ones marked Siglent?  (or 1-2 of the Chinese makers as good)?  I know the scope is also from China.

You might want to set up your probes.  Put the color rings on  them that match the color of your scope channels and then do the compensation adjustment for each on it's specific channel.

There's a 200 page User Manual:

https://siglentna.com/USA_website_2014/Documents/UserManual/SDS1000X&Xplus_UserManual_UM0101X-E02A.pdf

CharlotteSwiss buys an SDS1202X-E at reply 150 and we go from there testing a LOT of functions:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/what-an-oscilloscope-recommended-for-a-woman-passionate-about-electronics/

"Self Calibration" is required from time to time and the probes (set at 10x) need to be compensated.

Welcome to the forum.

The Quickstart booklet is just that, a very quick overview to get you started using the scope.

1. Only compensate the probes in 10x mode and set each channel to 10x input attenuation. Maybe check the firmware version installed is latest:
 https://int.siglent.com/download/firmwares/?ProId=12

2. No. It's an active MSO module as due to the small size of these DSO can't be made to fit inside the case of the scope. It has to communicate with the scope via the S-Bus (HDMI) connector.
3. The OEM probes are just fine unless they are faulty. Current and differential probes are spendy wherever you get them from, it's always been that way.

Should all 4 probes ge connected and their channels turned on when calibrating? Or one at a time/

The scope calibration does not calibrate the probes.

Each probe is adjusted one at a time by connecting its tip to the CAL output and turning its adjusting screw while observing its trace on the screen.

When you do a scope calibration, nothing should be connected to the scope.

When you calibrate the compensation of the probes, set the probes up with their color rings to match the input you will use that probe on.  Then, one by one, attach the probe's BNC connector to its particular input then attach the clip to the calibration point and adjust the screw on the probe for a nice square wave (no overshoot and no undershoot).  This is covered on page 4 and 5 of the quick start guide.
