ocilloscope 2 Signal Source Channels

hi, i'm looking to buy a scope that can be used to look at two signals with different time base and voltage base values. i'm assuming that i need an ocilloscope with 2 Signal Source Channels. is this true? I haven't found anyone that has experience with this.

Dave is awesome!
David Hess:
Do you mean something modern?  Dual timebases is not a very common feature.

The best which can generally be done is to use two separate oscilloscopes or display the original and horizontally magnified waveforms at the same time.

There's a bit of ambiguity in your question. As David says, dual timebase scopes are rare these days. If your frequencies are close, then many scopes offer alternate trigger, these would allow you to achieve two stable traces if the frequencies fit sensibly within the same timebase setting.

It's your "voltage base values" that has me worried. Do you mean different voltage levels (easily taken care of by the input attenuator settings), or do you mean probe ground references? If it's ground references then you're in for an expensive time. Normal scopes assume the probe ground references are the same as mains ground, a very few specialist scopes offer galvanic isolation between channels. The other way to go is a pair of differential probes.

Needless to say (hopefully) there are potential safety issues if you attempt to reference probe grounds to elevated voltages.

Maybe you can clarify your needs?

Rigol 1054 is a good start.  It won't do the two diff time base, but you can do a "deep memory" capture.  Dave Jones has several videos on it.
