Connectors for Wattsup
« on: December 24, 2015, 12:31:10 am »
Hi I bought a Watt's Up meter, but it doesn't come with connectors for input and output. Any recommendation what kind of connectors I can use that will give maximum flexibility (that I only solder the meter to connectors once and can reuse)? Thanks!

What power are you trying to measure? Mains 120VAC? 12V or 5V dc? Or everything?

The reasoning is simple:
- If you want to measure Mains AC, maybe look @ power plug type connectors
- If you want to measure low amp 12V, 5V dc (like circuits and what not) maybe a DC type power plug is better.

I'm not familiar with Watts-Up. What kind of loads does it measure?

Thanks for your assistance!

I'm trying to measure small circuits and and some USB peripherals (e.g. Raspberry PI itself and also plugged with different number of USB devices). Would it be sufficient if I strip apart some USB cables and solder them?

This is the Watts-Up meter that I bought.

I use about a half dozen of that type in my solar system though I usually pay about 10 for them.  They are quite handy but suffer accuracy in low currents.  They sense in the negative lead which can be an issue in some circuits with common grounds.  Only one of the positive leads needs to be connected.  There have been several technical tear downs of these units here with test reports.  I think everyone should own one of these.
