Oscilloscope probe sense pin

(1/1)

Housedad:
Can the sense pin on a oscilloscope probe be removed?  I have a couple of new 400 Mhz probes a friend gave me (China cheap).  They have a sense pin, but my scopes do not use it.  Should it be removed?  Does it matter?

Leave them unless the pin is likely to drop into the small slot around the BNC's.
Possibly if the BNC's are long enough you might make a thin plastic washer to prevent the sense pin dropping into the aforementioned slot. They are an exercise in frustration to remove should the pin engage in the BNC slot and don't ask me how I know this !
Otherwise just set them up with the correct input attenuation and be sure to check their compensation range is sufficient to match the input capacitance of the scope.

Ok.  Thank you.  So it is more of an inconvenience, not a major problem.  Not needed to remove the pin.  Thanks for the heads up about the pin going into the gap.  That would have been a place I would not want to be, trying to dig it out without damaging anything.   Yech.
