Hi, before rectifying an AC voltage coming from a transformer, my DMM reads 7,53 volts AC. After connecting a bridge rectifier and a smoothing capacitor my DMM reads 9,86 volts DC across the capacitor. Why is the voltage higher?

After connecting a bridge rectifier and a smoothing capacitor my DMM reads 9,86 volts DC across the capacitor. Why is the voltage higher? When reading AC the DMM is displaying the RMS value. For a sine wave the peak is 1.4 (square root of 2) times the RMS value. The rectifier charges the capacitor to almost the peak voltage.
