P-MOSFET reverse polarity protection
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:49:50 am »
I've just seen a YouTube vid (Afrotechmods) using a p-channel MOSFET as a reverse polarity protector.
The theory being that, in the forward mode, the power loss is less than any diode.

I was going to use a Zener as both a reverse polarity protector and an over-voltage protector (when the power is connected the right way).

Is there a way to use a "device" to do the job of the Zener but with the low power dissipation of the MOSFET?

Thanks.

If you're looking for a MOSFET solution specifically, I've seen MOSFET controllers like the LTC4365 that drive a mosfet (or a pair of them) to protect against over voltage. You set the voltage limits with a resistor divider.

Cheers.

No, anything will do just with cheap parts and without wasting loads of power.
