PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2-to-SFF-8673 cable without an adapter?
« on: April 12, 2021, 11:51:27 pm »

Hi,

I'm trying to connect an U.2 NVMe Backplane to the CPU-PCIe M.2 slot of an X570 motherboard to use a Samsung PM1733 SSD with it.

- According to the German FAQ, the backplane supports PCIe Gen4 (bottom of the FAQ page).

- I tried going the route with an M.2-to-SFF-8643 adapter and an SFF-8673-SFF-8673 cable, this solution leads to WHEA ID 17 errors when the SSD is transferring data.

- I've also tested multiple units of each part to rule out a random defect but that didn't change a thing.

- To further reduce the signal loss due to multiple adapter/cable connections I'd like to find a Gen4-capable M.2-to-SFF-8673 cable to not need an M.2-to-SFF-8643 adapter anymore. Something like this Intel part that shipped with 900P/905P U.2 Optane SSDs, but not with an SFF-8639 connector at one end: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/images/memory-and-storage/optane-memory/25739_image2.jpg

Has anybody here seen such a cable or can help otherwise?

Thanks for any assistance!

Regards,

You might also have some/more luck posting this question here:

@Electro Fan

Thank you for your response - I was unsure where to post this topic.

It might be too much of a niche's niche in the general computing sub-forum, the detailled signal integrity issues might also qualify it for the RF section?

Since I was unable to even find a single model of such a cable I wondered if it would be possible to solder one yourself...

...but is there a way to get a PCIe Gen4-quality M.2 M-key PCB where you can solder the ends of an SFF-8673-SFF-8673 cable to where one connector has been removed?
