Perf Board Friendly USB Connectors
« on: June 23, 2023, 09:11:43 am »
Does anyone make USB connectors that fit on a 0.1" hole grid? I am looking for as many types as I can find to make a diagnostic device for USB - test points, switches, etc. I would like to use perf board to construct it.

You use adapter PCB for that, not bare connector. https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-usb-2.54-adapter.html?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20230623012320&SearchText=usb+2.54+adapter&spm=a2g0o.home.1000002.0
Or you can badge a bare connector but it wont fit it the boles nicely. Never stopped me to use something if it does not fit in the holes.

Yes, I am aware of the adapters and also have made many parts fit the holes. I was just wondering if anyone knows of one where that is not necessary. There are literally thousands of USB connectors and searching for what I want could take weeks.

Thanks for the response.

Nobody makes special breadboard/perfboard components, there is no market for that. As USB connector needs mounting tabs for strength and connector shell is made out of a thin sheet metal, there is no chance to find something where everything fits into 2.54 mm holes. The best you can do without adapter PCB is using full size USB B or A connector with TH terminals and SMD mounting tabs. Terminal spacing is close enough to fit into the holes. For better mechanical strength you can wrap a turn or two of copper wire through nearby holes and over the mounting tabs, then solder everything together, instead of just soldering mounting tabs to copper pads.

How are you going to construct controlled impedance differential connections on perfboard?
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

It's not like it really matters on low and full speed devices. Commercial devices using low speed USB usually don"t bother with impedance either. If you do High speed, then it matters but most likely will work anyway if you don't use very long wires.

IIRC original (large) type B sockets fit exactly, and through hole mounted type A sockets and plugs also fit easily with a bit of bending.
Either way you will have to cut the mounting tabs on the sides of the socket (not recommended) or drill holes for them in the board.

None of that mini/micro/type C rubbish, though. It's all SMD.

How are you going to construct controlled impedance differential connections on perfboard?
With a twisted pair running from the connector to the IC ;)

I'd prefer a solid "manhattan" groundplane, or supported in free air 1cm  above the perfboard ;)

Ahh c'mon, again the overthinking  ;)? Just get the adapters at aliexpress and carry on!
Do you use so many connectors, in so many breadboards, so often, that you need a specific connector?  ::)
