Potentiometer tool name?
« on: December 23, 2015, 03:17:19 am »
What's the tool that I see youtubers using to turn the little brass knob on the small blue multiturn potrntiometers?  I can't seem to find any with classic words like "tool" or "turner"

Screwdriver?

Works for me.

The nice thing about the adjustment tools vs. a plain screwdriver is that the tool has a recessed blade inside a sleeve so that the thing doesn't slip off the head of the adjustment screw. The second nice thing is that the tool is insulated, so when you do slip it doesn't short out nearby components. I achieve the same effects by using a bit of heatshrink tubing around the shaft of an ordinary small screwdriver.

The last set I bought were thermoplastic, rather than thermosetting plastic. When I tried twiddling something hot the plastic melted and the metal insert fell out.

Need to buy some decent replacements.

For adjusting capacitors (and the mechanical zeroes on analog meters) you want to use a plastic or ceramic screw driver. Scope probes usually include a small plastic screw driver.

Yeah, the one with a recessed blade and a sleeve around it is what I am looking for.  I am currently using a precision screwdriver but it slips very easily and I've cultured some very impressive sparks already.  Luckily the circuit appears undamaged so far :p
