Power Supply
« on: July 06, 2014, 03:57:46 am »
Hey guys! I am knew to this forum and relatively new to electrical engineering. I was looking to purchase a variable power supply for my home. The input would be 120 VAC. My budget is around $100 I would prefer there to be a current control knob as well. I live in Canada but would be willing to purchase something from US. What would you all recommend as a good quality power supply.

Thanks

I would like 0-20 V and 0-4A.

Would you be willing to purchase a used unit?

It's possible to get a lot more power supply for the money this way, such as a triple output unit that meets your specs. Worth checking into IMHO.

What´s about the Korad 3005D?

No fiddling with course and fine adjustments...
Current adjustment in 1 milliamp steps.

http://www.amazon.com/KORAD-KA3005D-Precision-Adjustable-Regulated/dp/B0084JFWNY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1404692452&sr=8-2&keywords=korad+ka3005p

The PSU is meanwhile very reliable.
Note: The failure in the following review only occurred with 230V mains.
Amazon reports some issues with the power switch in the past.
I can´t confirm that. Perhaps I have a newer version.

The programmable version, teardown:

The programmable version, review (failed):

Failure fixed:

and tested:

BTW: The Korad 3005D is in Germany priced with 79.90 € (around 110 US-$).
Amazon is not the cheapest source, probably. Google in your region for the PSU.

Greetings,

Hartmut

That korad sure is a nice one, that's tempting to get but when I get a new one a dual variable output one would be great.

How about a Korad dual supply with bonus 5 volt supply thrown in?

Ah nice, ebay ones are around that price for dual variable outputs and 5v as well, so pretty good to go with a more well known brand, though that is with the $40 off, hopefully that is still the case some time from now.

Thanks for the input. I ended up going with a cheaper power supply that my hackerspace also has:
 http://www.amazon.ca/Displays-Digital-Precision-Supply-Adjustable/dp/B00C056Q7Y/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1405416515&sr=8-21&keywords=power+supply
I do like the Korad, although the added memory functions didn't seem that useful to me for the extra price.
