Do I need Static safe ?
« on: March 22, 2018, 03:08:03 pm »
Hi Guys, I would like to buy a SOLDAPULLT desolder hand tool.

The model that i want called "Universal" and it comes in 2 variations.
1) Regular
2) Static safe

The price difference between the models is negligible.

My question. Is it a good idea to get the static safe because it can protect certain components and its nice/good to have ? or using a static safe can actually hurt or not be ok for certain uses ?

I am a beginner and working mainly on pro audio gear.

Thank you
Tom

No definitely not a solder sucker will not kill any component with static

Well ... it depends.

The plastic in the anti-static solder sucker is a type that doesn’t generate static electricity when actuated. The plastic in the regular type probably does. And think about how you use the thing: you put it right at the pin of a device, so for the type that does generate static, the static gets discharged right at the component.

“It depends” on the part’s sensitivity to static electricity. Old CMOS parts? Yeah, you’ll probably blow them up. Big bipolar power transistors? Probably not.

But when you use one of these things, you are generally uninterested in reusing the chip you are removing. So the zap doesn’t matter. Unless you zap a neighboring device. In which case it does.

Guys, thank you for the replay and help.
I was ordering the regular solder sucker and found out they have 25$ minimum on there site  |O (It's not early 2000!! / Very annoying) so i took the static one just to be over 25 and added a ring  :-\

Thanks for the help

Tom
