Power supply purchase
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:49:07 am »
Hi all,
Does this PS look OK for general DIY projects? The price fits my budget and it has some good reviews.

Thanks,

I'd suggest seeing our forum founder, Elec. Engr. Dave Jone's, "How to set up a basic electronics lab", a YouTube video. Hope this helps.

This looks like Gopher CPS-3205 model. It is a switchmode type, works ok for a price. It is light, user interface is easy, inside construction is solid. It has some switching noise when in some operation modes, also stability/turn on performance is not the best.

If your requirements are not super strict on noise/voltage ripple/accuracy, this DC supply is good choice.

Search around this forum for "Gopher" to find discussions about these suplies.

Its a SMPS and thats why the ripple spec is 30 mV.
A linear PSU will have much better ripple specs, but also be much heavier and probably larger.
It not be possible to find a new linear PSU for a similar price as the shipping fees will be much more due to its weight.
For project use just ensure you add additional bulk capacitance to reduce SMPS ripple.
Have a look in Davids (Hiplane) Aliexpress store, he can advise you:
