| PT100 3 wire probe to Keithley 6100 |

| cowasaki:
I’ve bought a PT100 probe with three wires. Does anyone have details of how to connect this to a four wire multimeter. I have a Keithley 6100 |

If you want a good remote sense you need to take the current used into account. A PT100 is a temperature controlled resistor. As temperature changes current changes and as all wires have resistance the voltage drop on the wires changes. So you have the current to run the PT100 changing. Your voltmeter is built to use very low current, so a voltage change is a small current change. A four wire PT100 would let your voltmeter measure the voltage at the PT100. Less wires then this will give you errors. A three wire PT100 interface is enough connections to correct for wire drop if you assume that the two wires that have PT100 current have the same resistance. From three wires you can measure three values. One of these is wire voltage drop. You then use the three values to computer the actual PT100 value. C |
