Purchasing Hakko FX888-D which extra tips
« on: May 10, 2015, 06:45:13 pm »
as the description says. im puzzled as to which extra tips i should get. i can budget for 2-3 different kinds.

i have been thinking of this tip
http://www.hakkousa.com/detail.asp?CID=192,341&PID=4833&Page=2

which looks to be the smallest chisel point they do.

but i sometimes do work on my 3d printers and the heated bedds which have a HUGE contact pad. so should i purchase a larger chisel tip?

conical? pencil? that weird slant chisel? bent conical?

so many tips >.<

Edit: not sure if obvious but from the t18 series of hakko.

Edit:Edit: Found two more ones that may be ok. im still not sure >.< http://www.hakkousa.com/detail.asp?CID=192,341&PID=4831&Page=2

I like that tip.  Probably my most use.  I also like the D08, which is the smallest chisel tip.

Through hole I've moved away from C shape to using D shape, they are versatile. A rule of thumb is measure the size of the pads you're soldering the most and aim for only slightly larger than the pad and use good temp control.

D24 and D32 are useful. It is sometimes easier (as long as your not going crazy) to just bump up the temp on large thermal masses and then knock it down when you are done. S3 will brute force anything.

For SMD it depends on your purpose and size, I have S4, D8 for precision and C2, C3, C4 for jobs of all sizes.

I had ended up getting two tips.

For my big jobs needing large contact.

T18-D32

For the smaller jobs

T18-S9

like other than the extra shaft length. what IS the real difference, between the D and the S Models. i could only see one and the S models have a VERY slight round to the very leading edge of the tip.

the d08 to me seemed very similar to the s9 and the 08 wasnt in stock. ( or carried by them sadface)

The S9 has a thinner line (blade) profile almost half that of the D8.
The D8 shows as in stock for me.

You can do an amazing amount of stuff with just a few different sizes of chisel shapes to start. Happens to be handy on your wallet too.  :-+

Hakko's Select Tip Shape page might be of some help, as it can show you what tip shapes are used for what purpose/task.  ;)

FWIW, If you get into a lot of SMD soldering, a drag soldering tip, a very fine point (tacking corners on IC's before drag soldering), and bent fine point can be extremely handy IME for example (pulling any bridges).

I got the D32, D24 and D12 in addition to the stock B conical for my 888D. I've been able to reliably solder 0402 with the D12 so I think I'm mostly sorted.
