Qualety mini pliers, do they exists?
« on: November 27, 2018, 10:44:04 pm »
I am getting a bit tiered of the super cheap mini plyers you can bye everywhere they sell bad and cheap tools. Isn't there some high quality mini plyers that can handle almost the same use/abuse as Snap-On, Knipex and so on?
Even if I appear online is it not necessary so, my computer is on 24/7 even if I am not on.

What's wrong with the brands you mention? Don't they have appropriate models?

Bassman59 they are fairly cheap, and you say that they are great? :-)

Mr. Scram the "problem" is that they do only make the normal to large size for the "out in the field" worker, what I am looking for is the small pliers that are more designet toward small task. But normally you can either bye normal size great quality or the small that none would use for anything other then grannys sewing-box. :-)

Bahco/Lindstrom  7891 springs to mind, you will pay for it, but you always do for good tools, I have a set going on 20 years old and still fine.

You’ll need to search for the correct sizes for your needs, but the following brands all make quality pliers but some brands have more than one quality line:
•   Engineer made in Japan (I’ve never been disappointed in the quality)
•   Knipex made in Europe (Knipex may make some other brands like Wiha, Wera and Bahco)
•   Wiha, Wera and Bahco all have a quality product line as well as more economy products
•   Excelta are expensive but superb quality; I don’t think they make an economy line
You may be able to find some really good quality pliers that are over 25 years old if you are lucky.  You can also grind off or grind down the tips of damaged pliers to suit, just don’t get them too hot in the process.
Hemostats are good for a lot of electronics work and most are good stainless that resists solder and flux.

Knipex does make mini pliers for electronics specifically: https://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=art_detail&parentID=1336&groupID=1356&artID=35316

I've been using those for a while, nothing bad to say really.

Agree Lindstrom are really good quality for a whole range of miniature tools, including side cutters.  :-+
As you say, they are expensive. But in your case they have cost you £2UK a year.

Another vote for Linstrom. Had some at one work place, best tools I ever used.
Expensive new (try Farnell or RS)
They alway go for a packet on ebay  :(

I use CK branded snipe nose pliers that are decent for not too much £££'s.
As others have said though if you really torque them it's heavier duty pliers you will need.
I use mine for general electronics work and they are ideal. For bending or pulling wires through or gripping small nuts and bolts or things like that they handle it no problem at all but if I were to get both hands on them and really heave them I feel they would give up.
I actually bought the bent nose ones first and was happy enough with them to go on and buy the straight nose set too. For heavier work I use Japans Engineer branded pliers which are also great.
Sparks and Smoke means i'm nearly there!

Also check Hozan (E.g.: https://www.hozan.co.jp/E/catalog/tools/index.html ) I try to get Hozan or Engineer when I can. Hozan should be a bit cheaper.

I would vote for Bahco (and Lindstrom). For really small work (replacing tweezers) - Lindstrom, they're somewhat flexible (soft handles). For real hard grip - Bahco 2430G (https://www.bahco.com/ru-ru/p/snipe-nose-pliers-longhard-steel-wire/c1-3e-d0-93-2c-a6-24-ea-c1-66-f8-93-07-02-5c-ab/) - these are real strong pliers for small work, can get hold on everything and are very sturdy.
Knipex is somewhere in between these two. Chrome finished ones are not holding as good as Bahco nor small enough like Lindstrom. And they do get cracks on the edges with some hard work...

Another vote for Lindstrom, they are excellent, however, (and I realise this probably won't be most people's experience) I have seen the 'nose' of a few Lindstrom cutters sheared off  (no, it wasn't misuse, they were used for snipping legs on SMD parts only, they're too damn expensive to risk using for anything else)

I frankensteined my own pair. Just loved the shape of these plier jaws off a mini multitool.
)

Surprisingly, the internal spring survived the brazing operation completely intact. This has been my primary needle nose plier at my electronics bench for the last decade.

Someone needs to make them like this from the get go. Many needle nose pliers are too skinny for too much of the tip, leading to flex. In my own experience, it is way more likely I need to reach only very shallow depth into a tight spot, just with the tip of the jaws. This shape is excellent for fine electrical work, providing enough rigidity where it is needed while maintaining wide enough jaws to precisely bend wires. The fastener gripping area is handy, as well. Being flat and skinny in at least one dimension is also helpful rather than taper in both axes. Slips deep between wires like a snake, despite being tall.

They do some super flush cutting variants that have very little metal in the jaws that can suffer from this, but you almost certainly do not really need that variant  (Unless you really, really do need what it does in which case it is just a cost of doing business).

I use a set of the Lindstrom flush cutters and they are awesome! They are tiny compared to my other flush cutters but are by far the best! The CK flush cutters are quite good too and are only 1/5 the price of the Lindstrom cutters.
I would recommend either.

Same here- they seem to be made of a cast metal which is hard and brittle. Just return them for a replacement if you have that problem.

Another brand that is good in sidecutters tools is Unior and the Gedore, but this one is expensive.

If you only want to spend that get either the "CK" brand or Japanese "Engineer" brand and you won't be disappointed, both can be had on Ebay or Amazon.
