as every one knows, they are cheap and available everywhere, I have some gates and flip flops
It would be nice if someone has long experience in digital electronics would recommend us list from the 74 family that he used over the years that he might think they are useful to have :-+

if what I have wrote doesn't make sense for you or you think there is something wrong, please correct me, I am still beginner and what I know probably less than what you know

Don't forget to stock up on cd4000 logic as well, not many families can be run on anything from button cells to car batteries without regulation nowadays.

In my experience that will not be helpful. Nowadays, in most parts of the world, you can order the components you need and have them delivered remarkably quickly and cheaply. =

For many reasons, the best technique is to work out what you want do, work out how you want to do it, then simulate the circuit either by hand or by using a "proper" simulator. And then buy all the components including PSU, decoupling components, and circuit board (preferably not a springleaf breadboard).
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

This. I don't really use 74-series anymore as 90% of what I do is sub-1MHz. Stock items for me are 4001, 4011, 4013, 4017, 4023, 4026, 4040, 4046, 4049, 4060, 40106, 4518 and some CMOS 555's. Oh and Don Lancaster's CMOS Cookbook. Amazing what you can do with that selection of ICs - it's an entire branch of electronics on it's own.
