recommendations for good free pcb software routing software?
« on: March 01, 2016, 09:50:46 am »
so I tried a few softwares - expressPCB is one, but it only supports one website and not the website I wanted (or indeed not even support for printing it out for DIY pcb)

I also tried AutoTRAX DEX but it never even started, it just sat as a dead process never really doing anything at all.

So now I come here, what are a few good free PCB designing software that doesn't have a lot of arbitrary limitations (board size, max traces or other silly design constraints) that supports exporting to commonly supported formats?

i would say kicad, i tried geda, didnt work for me,

I will say, if you start on kicad, get the hang of the component creation tool, once you know most of that, its very robust

right, component creation tool - I'll have to remember that for more complex builds, don't think I'll need it for the first few boards I'll produce

Just some simple interface boards so I can finish up a couple projects - it's kinda dodgy to just hardsolder 40 wires when I can make a small daughterboard and solder an FFC connector to it and connect the component to that, way cleaner and less error-prone (and faster, soldering an FFC connector is so much faster than soldering 40 individual wires)

anyway, before I digress too much - thanks for the recommendation, I'll have a look at it and see if I can figure out the component designer tool

I've used each of these. They are fairly well known in the industry and the free versions are very good.

http://www.orcad.com/

My favorite is Kicad.

I used freerouter when it was an online service, but now that it is offline you can run locally https://github.com/freerouting/freerouting

It worked fine for me.
