Replacing trim pot with multi turn on buck regulator
« on: November 15, 2016, 02:34:50 pm »
I bought a relatively inexpensive 10 turn pot for a buck regulator (pic attached).  Made the mistake of not seeing the power rating of 2W on the 10 turn when I ordered it. I'm wondering if the power produced though would actually be running through the pot?  Currently I run the regulator up to around 3Watts.  Seems to work fine and I don't imagine (i could be wrong) that the trim pot has much of a power rating either.  I do expect to generate more power with some other applications, ~6-7W.

If the circuit though has all the power going through the pot maybe I should look for something with a higher rating? I know the picture doesn't show the actual circuit but maybe it helps.

TIA

You are totally fine with your 10 turn 2W pot, those tiny trim pots used on the original design are useable for up to a few mW, i would guess 250mW max.
The power will go in no way through the pot, they are only used with signal levels. So - keep it the way you do right now, there shouldn`t be any problem at all.
