Moving coil ammeter for bidirectional currents?
« on: May 16, 2019, 07:31:58 am »
Is there a generic name for the type of ammeter that has zero in the middle of the scale and swings left or right depending on the direction of current flow?
Typically these are used for showing whether a battery is being charged or discharged.

Alternatively is it ok to put two unidirectional current meters in series, one with reversed connections to show the reversed flow? Will alternately driving the meters backwards damage them?

Zero center scale? Google brings up a ton.
All my posts are made with 100% recycled electrons and bare traces of grey matter.

A centre zero ammeter is what you want.

Alternatively is it ok to put two unidirectional current meters in series, one with reversed connections to show the reversed flow? Will alternately driving the meters backwards damage them?
It is possible of course and the mechanical stress on the movement of the reversed meter may not cause damage, but it's certainly not an idea that will earn the approval of most people here.  It is a clumsy idea - and unnecessary since you can get the type of meter you are after.
