Schematic symbol best practices

(1/1)

Deepak:
So I'm working on a project that requires me to create some schematic symbols which don't already exist in the default library. Based on ones I've looked at previously I've picked up the following:

* Vxx up top and GND at the bottom
* Inputs on the left, outputs on the right
* Group like pins
* Leave space between unlike pins
* Don't hide pins
* Don't duplicate numbers
Have I missed any other obvious guidelines?

Also, I'm a bit unclear as to how to resolve the last two against something like a shield and the footprint I'm mapping to. Let's say it's a USB connector with four connections for the shield to the board. Obviously I'd have the Vbus, GND, and two data pins - but if I have one shield then there are three orphaned pads on the footprint that have to be manually connected to the correct net. The alternative would be to put four shield pins with unique numbers on the schematic which also seems a bit insane. How do the pros handle it?
