Scope cables - any recommendations?
« on: November 18, 2019, 08:01:23 pm »
Hi,
I'm not new to electronic/ scopes but in the electronics lab we always used RG-58 coaxes to connect to the scope, this cable is too heavy for connecting to my current projects (it literally pulls my work of the table), any recommendation for other coaxes? I need to create my own scope probes and i don't have much experience doing this.

Thanks

*10 "high" impedance probes are made with special lossy flexible coax, not standard RF coax. Exception: Z0 resistive divider probes, which require a 50ohm termination in the scope.

For much more information about an important subject, see the references at https://entertaininghacks.wordpress.com/library-2/scope-probe-reference-material/
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

Scope probes are no easy thing to build, but RG-58 presumably implies BNC to BNC patchcords rather than probes. In which case you could buy RG-174 patchcords (3mm diameter). Not sure if anything thinner is available with BNC.

Other than that, put a book on the cable to keep it from sliding off :P

I use RG316 terminated in BNC's and / or SMA's.  It is a little stiff but still workable.  I'm pretty sure it is about the same diameter as RG174.
Still learning; good judgment comes from experience, which comes from bad judgment!!
