Shaded pole motor frame
« on: August 09, 2018, 09:39:20 pm »
Just wandering if it's possible to make a modest light duty transformer from a shaded pole motor frame ? I was thinking with the copper shaded ring removed, then tape the core and wrap some appropriate wire for a secondary. And not exceeding the primary current drawn from any corresponding secondary winding. Does that sound feasable  ?
Don't like wasting stuff, I've no use for it as a motor. But could use it as a light duty transformer, low voltage that is.
Thoughts appropriate.
Thanks for reading.

It would probably make a terrible transformer. Is it in good shape as a motor? Seems like somebody could use it, motors tend to be more expensive than transformers.

Yes it's working as a motor, it's no use as a motor to me unfortunately, I know there's not as much silicon steel on that side of the motor. But I was thinking turns on all visible steel opposite the primary winding.

You could build a fan, or a Van de Graff generator, or a vibrating tumbler, or...

Cheers for the ideas, just not my thing really.
Thanks anyway.

I think I've seen this before in a microwave. A control board was powered off a secondary winding on the fan motor.

If you already need a motor for something and wanted a low current power supply for something else, then this would work, as a cost and space saving measure, but if there's no requirement for a motor, then you're better off just using a transformer.

Hi.

I have seen low power windings added to the coil in shaded pole motors to obtain small amounts 1-2VA of power.

I am not sure it will work very well if you remove the rotor.

You will have a big gap in the magnetic circuit and it might overheat.

Thanks for the replys,  yes I've seen that before. Rather than toss the motor in the bin...
I was contemplating using it as a stand alone transformer in a circuit. I will give it a try to see is it's a viable thing worth doing. My winding will be low voltage, or enough turns for low voltage. And if I go on a power rating of the original unit as a motor, doubt I can go far wrong. I've not looked at it's power rating yet. But what ever that is I will consider that the maximum current to attempt to draw from it.
Quick search, RS had a similar unit rated at 19 watts. So maybe 12 Volts 1.5 Amps. Just have to try it and see. I'm fairly sure there would be something out of a secondary winding wound round that section of the frame. Just unsure how effective and efficient it would be.
