shorting HP 6253A power supply
« on: January 13, 2025, 04:32:12 pm »
Howdy,

Is there a 'proper' way to short output terminals?  This from the HP 6253 manual:

3-7 CONSTANT VOLTAGE

3-8 To select a constant voltage output, proceed
as follows:

a. Turn-on power supply and adjust VOLTAGE
controls for desired output voltage (output terminals
open).

b. Short output terminals and adjust CURRENT controls for maximum output cment allowable
(current limit), as determined by load conditions.
If a load change causes the cment limit to be exceeded, the power supply will automatically cross-'
wer to constant cment output at the preset current
limit and the output voltage wlll drop propartionately. In setttng the current limit, allowance must be
made for high peak current which can cause unwanted cross-ovet. (Refer to Paragraph 3-46.)

THANK YOU for your time!

If you know the value you need for current limit, then just short the output terminals with a banana lead or whatever's convenient to adjust the current limit per their instructions.
If you don't know, but have a working load that you want to power, just set the voltage, connect the load, and turn up the current limit until you are back to the correct voltage.
Note that you may not be able to set the voltage (even with an open circuit) with the current limit pot fully counter-clockwise.

Howdy,

Should be 'current'.

I have no idea why the copy and paste did not paste correctly - unless it had something to do with the original being a PDF.   (I see there are some squares in the text as well.)
