Siglent SDS-1052DL as a starter oscilliscope
« on: March 31, 2019, 04:10:43 pm »
Hi All,

I've never owned an oscilloscope but would like to have it as a part of my electronics test equipment. Does anybody have any thoughts about this scope as a starter scope. Any other scopes to recommend for a starter?

Thanks.

People here could perhaps offer better guidance if you were to give some indication of the type of tasks or projects you intend or are likely to work on. An indication of your budget would also help immensely as there is no point people recommending equipment which is out of your reach.

Wavecom Instruments currently have the SDS 1052DL+ listed for $351 and the SDS 1102DL+ for $383 both including GST so it's only $32 extra for the 100 MHz version. Wavecom also sell on Ebay where they are listing the SDS 1052DL+ for $319 and the SDS 1102DL+ for $368 both with free shipping so their pricing is all over the place. The Rigol DS-1054Z is a lot more expensive down here and would be around $637 including GST from Emona Instruments.

I've never bought SDS1052DL into NZ mainly due to their minuscule memory depth for a DSO.
Instead to get the best from a DSO's abilities you are much better off with a min of 1 Mpts memory depth and preferably more.
As this is to be your first scope in that you'll learn to use DSO features and in time you'll come to understand the limitations of a DSO with very little memory.

With all this ^ in mind the least capable Siglents I sell are SDS1102CML and more lately the Plus version that now has the higher res display and a LAN connection.
Good luck with your hunt.  :)
