Siglent SDS1052DL+ vs Rigol DS154Z
« on: January 01, 2017, 10:50:45 pm »
I've seen comparisons before with other models and it seems the Rigol is often recommended. However, it's been some time since Siglent has time to develop and wonder what the current status is.

Rigol DS1054Z: $399
Siglent SDS1052DL+: $279

There's a significant difference in price, but how reliable are Siglents?

My purpose: Typical hobby scope
-Max frequency up to 1MHz maybe
-Must have FFT
-No need for saving signals/printing them
-Must be able to represent signals accurately at all time ranges (if you know what I mean, not like 3 points/cycle or something)

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Those 2 models are miles apart in terms of spec, the Siglent having only a tiny memory depth.

Perfectly reliable.

A better comparison would be a SDS1102X with free decoding option at present but only 2 channels for $425

My biggest seller as an entry level unit is SDS1102CML+ and I don't/won't stock lesser models.

Settled, bit the bullet and got the DS154Z :) after reviewing the specs and consensus, there's no reason not to get it.

Ehr... you know, given a sample rate and a memory size there is a mathematical limit on the upper and lower frequency of the signal you want to acquire. Also, usually a scope with "auto" memory settings will reduce the acquisition memory to about 10x the screen size, to keep the waveform rate high. also slower timebases will use slower sample rates.

After using it i can find many reasons not to recommend it, despite the consensus. but i'm a lone wolf, you have to decide if you ever play with better toys

Which oscilloscope do you prefer after your experience with Rigol?

I have the SDS1102CML - what did they add to the + version?

Higher res display and LAN for the same price.
Few changes to the GUI too.
New series of firmware, not suitable for the non + models.

Little introduction in these 2 posts:

4 channels is double than 2,  In todays i2c spi word, 4 channels make a difference, but sigilent is a nice scope for the price, same as rigol. Rigol have the advantage that is very easy to crack and will enable all options for free.

So do you all recommend SDS1102CML+ over the Rigol? It's $40 difference from what I can tell.. and fewer bugs with the Rigol?

I'm happy with my SDS1102CML, it does what I need, I don't do any complex or super high speed stuff, and I have a separate logic analyzer (just a cheap one) to monitor multiple digital lines.

It's $40 difference

$40 is nothing, get what you want, I don't think there's much chance of this price range of scopes increasing any in the next few months.
I'm quite happy with the 2 ch cml+, good screen, low noise, fast UI, but I couldn't recommend it while it seems to have long(2MB) memory problems.

I will say I got my Siglent for WAY under MSRP, so it was a lot more than a $40 difference. In fact I used the difference to pick up an HP E3610A power supply. I'm sure I could have found a similar deal on the Rigol had I looked. Also mine is the non + model, I don't think it has memory issues. At least, none that have affected my use thus far.
