Smallest 60-pin connector easily pluggable
« on: January 10, 2022, 10:30:43 pm »
Hi everyone, I am looking for a 60-pin connector that can be plugged and unplugged to connect point A to point B. Intuitively, I think to make it take minimal space, it has to be circular but I am open to other options (D-Sub connector, socket connector, etc). It has to fit in tight spot (12mm). I would also like it to be extensible by making a chain of cables made from these connectors. To illustrate this, please look at the following (here point A and B are source and target):

Cable made of such connectors:
A---female <- male-----------------------------------female <- male-----------------------------------female <- male---B

Another bonus would be if such cables are readily available and hopefully affordable. (I saw some military grade ones like D38999 https://www.ittcannon.com/Core/medialibrary/ITTCannon/website/Literature/Catalogs-Brochures/MILDTL-38999-fullcatalog.pdf which I think are not commercially widely available and are huge anyway. (Thanks to @rob77 for 4th post below)

I like the individual wires in these 60 wires to be very thin.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I use 3M IDC connectors that also have a mating board-type connector.
This is the board-mount right-angle one,  P50E-068P1-SR1-EA,
This is the cable IDC one, for .025" cable. P25E-068S-EA
These are available from Mouser.

Thank you for your reply. What's the size? It seems quite big, isn't it? I want it to fit in an area that's around 1cm x 3cm.

I was thinking of something like the attached image. I don't know how to go about it though.

60-70 pins at 1x3cm ? and affordable ?  sorry but i have some bad news for you :)

what is the application ? those connectors in that datasheet you linked are much bigger and will cost you an arm and a leg..

Yes I guessed it'd be tough to find such a connector :(
It's to connect a motherboard to an LCD. Any chance with 60-pin FFC connector that's 3cm ? I guess a 0.5mm one would kind of be fine... 0.5mm x 60 = 30 mm

Define affordable. But 60 signals, relatively high speed (you mentioned display) through a connector <12mm in diameter will not be cheap if it exists at all. There are 60+ pin circular connectors, but I only know of bigger ones ( https://sk.farnell.com/w/c/connectors/circular-connectors-components/circular-mil-spec-connectors/prl/vysledky?no-of-contacts=60contacts|61contacts|65contacts|66contacts|79contacts|85contacts|99contacts|100contacts|128contacts&sort=P_PRICE ).

They do have some extra spacing needed (a few mm on each side), but such 60 signal cables exist. See:

Using a circular connector for a mere monitor lcd to an motherboard ??     a D-sub connector (vga  is only 15 pins ??)  you can go at least  one meter long ??  for longer wiring   you will ned  vga distribution system  to keep a good signal over cable length

You even can use vga converters who could get you an rj 45 interfacing ??     down to 8 pins for your vga video signal over great distance, and some  on a optical fiber too ???

For an flat FPC cable anything can do  or be designed,  signal paths with efficient grounding around them ...  we have some at my job,  shielded on one side and proper grounding around the signals path  can go up to 25 -30 cm   without problems  for the tight spot you mentioned

You could even use  dual rows of fpc connectors IE:  2 flat connectors / cable on another.

You could even use old  scsi high density interfaces connectors, you had the 50 and 68 pins ??   no tight spot :(

yes a round 60 pins connector may or will cost a lot
