SMD flat silent buttons
« on: February 09, 2020, 11:41:08 am »
Hi all,

I'd like to find a small silent tactile switch to substitute my loud "Click" switches. These are common momentary SMD switch found on every board.

Here's an example image:
924532-0

Dimensions are 6x6.5x2 mm.

Looking on internet I can't find silent switches of this dimensions, especially height.

I found a lot Keyboard switches and the smaller one is this, used inside silent mouse (6x6x6.5)

924536-1

Did I use wrong terms when searching or is it impossible to have 2mm height button with silent attribute due construction?

Here's a link for a datasheet from C&K which might give you some ideas.  I'm not sure if they have something in the height you require, but the KSC2 series are quiet.  Not 100% silent, but the actuator button is rubber, so they are quiet.

I think that for something like that, “silent” and “tactile” are very hard to unite, since the tactility comes from a collapsing metal dome, which will cause some click to resonate through the PCB. Some will be much quieter, but not silent like a linear keyboard switch.

What about those metal domes that you solder right to the PCB?

Or an actual rubber membrane keypad?
