Title: SMPS - buck converter PCB layout - PLS review
Post by: Tom199 on September 08, 2020, 01:34:00 pm
Hi everyone, can someone pls review my SMPS PCB layout? I am not sure about grounding and Vcc pin controller distance... Let me please know if there are more things to rework in this layout.

- Used controller is NCP3020A
- Vin is 12V, Vout should be 7V/10A

Thx in advance.

I won't use a controller with external TO220 at low frequency for that buck...
You get very large magnetic loop areas and large areas for the switch node.
You should try something like the ADP2389 https://www.analog.com/en/products/adp2389.html#product-overview (https://www.analog.com/en/products/adp2389.html#product-overview) which gives you a much more compact design. If you don't need the highest possible efficiency operating the regulator at the upper end of it's frequency range to get a smaller inductor and smaller caps. This seems to be counterintuitive but small size is your friend.
The step response benefits as well.
