SMPS/POWER

I need a guide to modify a smps to run on 48v dc input.  Or Is it possible to modify off the shelf dc dc buck converter to run on more than 40v dc. I have several Lm2596 boards which has maximum 40v input specs. I need output 5v 1A.

These boards are spec'd to 40V because that is what the LM2596 is capable of. You could extend the range by putting a zener in series but

- that will greatly reduce your efficiency
- burn several watts in that zener

You should be looking for a module and/or IC that does 48V (and on top of that a healthy margin) and start from there...
