Sourcing wire wrap wire
« on: February 10, 2023, 04:23:13 am »
I've had trouble buying wire wrap wire for a while, the old days when it was always one standard gauge seem to be gone. My recent purchases had all suffered from problems including unexpectedly fine gauge or crappy metal - wraps with a tendency to break at the pin. Firstly, is there a 'standard' gauge for wire wrap wire? Secondly, can anyone suggest a source of good quality material in hobby quantities? Choice of colours would be nice but not essential.

Yes, 30 AWG is the standard size. The usual insulation is Kynar and the wire will be silver plated, not tinned.

You can find plenty of 30 AWG wire from China for cheap but it is tin plated with PVC insulation which has a much larger outside diameter due to insulation thickness which makes for some issues with standard wrapping bits.

You can find some decent stuff on eBay if you look for 30 AWG and Kynar together- this automatically becomes silver plated due to the higher temps required to apply the Kynar insulation.

Not sure what’s available locally where you are.

Rockby electronics has precut/stripped packs in various lengths and some colour choices:
