Charging 2 12v batteries in series
« on: May 17, 2019, 08:46:51 pm »
Good Day All,

I have two 12v 7.2ah SLA batteries wired in series to produce 24v. Looking for the best charging methods, as they are relatively small batteries, most of the 24v series chargers are too powerful. Can I safely connect 2 12v chargers (low amp) to each battery while still keeping the batteries connected in series? I'm looking to avoid have to remove the wiring each time I need to charge the batteries if possible.

Thanks,
Joe

Welcome to the forum.

There should be no problem if the outputs of each charger are truly isolated and not hard to check with a DMM.
Of more importance is not to exceed the initial charging rate of SLA's.
A good guide is 10% of the battery capacity and many wallwart chargers will struggle to provide more than an amp.
Automotive chargers provide much more current and a good way to tame them is to add a 21W or smaller bulb in series with one charger lead. This can also provide instant identification of a connection mistake where the bulb will glow brightly.
