Tektronix 2225 - Replacement Probe Advice Requested
« on: February 01, 2022, 11:21:23 pm »
I purchased a used Tektronix 2225 Scope 50Mhz. No probes were included.

Question: What Oscilloscope probes (general purpose) should I buy?

I found on Amazon: Tektronix TPP0101 10X 100 MHz Passive Voltage Probe:

https://www.amazon.com/Tektronix-TPP0101-Passive-Voltage-Covered/dp/B00A7GYALC/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3ERH3HUP6M7UI&keywords=tektronix%2Bprobe&qid=1643748119&sprefix=tektronix%2Bprobe%2Caps%2C195&sr=8-4&th=1

Would two of these be a good choice?
The Scope is only 50Mhz, but the probes are rated for 100Mhz?

Suggesting a good brand (I'm not cheap), would be much appreciated.

That should work well, although I am not a fan of Amazon.

Those will work, but you might want to look at the Probemaster 4904, perhaps the 4904-1K Deluxe Kit.  Probing accessories are always helpful.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Tektronix P6103 is the recomended probe for that scope. It is not a problem for the probe to exceed the scopes spec's. The probes adjustable capacitance is what maters. The 2225 is 25pf (well marked on scope) the probe must be adjustable in that range plus or minus a few pico-farads.

You're right, and it would be a close call.  I didn't realize the 22xx scopes varied, all the one I've seen have been 20pF AFAIK.  The Probemaster I recommended is 10-50pF!  I guess that will work on almost anything.

Thanks for your advice.
I opened a case with Tektronix Technical Support on 2/2/2022, TekTronix response:
---
We stopped production of the 2225 in 1993. We no longer offer any probes that would be considered compatible. You might be able to find a generic probe made by a different company.

The scope is 50MHz and 1M ohm and has 25 pf Input capacitance. Look for a passive probe that has a compensation range that is both north and south of 25 pF. (Example 20-30 pF compensation range). and that is 1M ohm and at least 50MHz bandwidth.

Good luck on your search.

Thanks to you and everyone who replied.

I wanted to have some experience using an old Analog Oscilloscope hence I purchased a Used Tektronix 2225 from ebay. After reading the response from everyone here and including the response from TekTronix. I went back to ebay and purchased some used P6103  probes, I bought five P6103 probes, hopefully I can get at least two good working ones.

I spent more money on the used probes than the Oscilloscope. Crap, and There was a really super nice 2245 that I should have bought as it was complete with stand, books, probes everything. Damn!!! Lesson learned, try to buy things complete.

The 2225 is a great scope (and mine failed under warranty) I needed it at the time so I fixed it, Tektronix was very helpful then.
most of the early 2xxx are 20pf later they are 15pf the 2815 is 27pf. The 2236 is 22pf, the A version is 20pf so a range of 10 to 50 would cover all of them and most of other series units.
