TP4056 - Under Voltage Lockout circuit
« on: June 20, 2017, 03:29:28 pm »
Hi all,

I was wondering how I would implement an undervoltage lockout circuit using the TP4056. Is it even possible?

Essentially I want the device to power off or cut-off power coming from the battery once the battery reaches 3.0 V (or whatever the undervoltage lockout is).

The datasheet states that it offers under voltage lockout, but I'm not sure where? What pin? How would I implement it?

I have the little charger board you can buy on ebay.

Thanks

Can be used pin8(CE) to enable/disable the chip
Can be used mosfet to turn off 5V power

Wrong product.  Tp4056 is a charger, it has nothing to do with discharge.  Uvlo on tp4056 will mean it will not charge if the cell is very dead (without checking datasheet).

What you want is the dw01 and 8205a combination cell protection.

Some boards jnclude both 4056, and dw01+8205a for charge  and protection in one

Ah ok,
so what is meant is that the chip won't charge if VBat < 3.0 (or whatever the UVLO setting is).

Not quite.  If VBat < 3.0 then the TP4056 will trickle charge the cell at I_trckl which is about C/10 (approx 100mA for a 1Amp setup, e.g R_prog=1.2K) until cell voltage exceeds V_trckl (2.9-3.0V).

What you want is the dw01 and 8205a combination cell protection.

Or, just the DW01+8205A board, its plenty on the net, example photo below compared to TO220 chip.

Yeah, so I got a board now with the DW01 and 8205 built in. But like Julian Ilett's video, the DW01 over-discharge protection voltage is 2.4V before the system powers off.

Isn't 2.4V too low for a LiPo cell? Why would they do this? I mean, I suppose that the battery will temporarily recharge above 2.4, but doesn't it seem too low?

problem solved?

I face the same problem. I am searching for a DW01 equivalent that shuts down at 3.2V -- or at an adjustable voltage.

In his video, Great Scott switched from the DW01 to the FS312F-G, which has a 2.9V cutoff rather than 2.4V.  I think they are from the same manufacturer, and probably have the same pinout.

At about 8:30 into the video.

the TP4056 and protection boards are for LIon, 4.2v, NOT LIPo - your risking an explosion charging a 3.7v battery to 4.2v!!!

That's odd;  all of the Adafruit 3.7v lipo battery chargers charge to 4.2v.  Are you saying they are blowing up their customers?!!?

i'm saying read your battery datasheets.

and maybe this one.

All the Lithium Polymer cells I have encountered require charging to terminate at 4.2 volts.  I think you may be confusing the average voltage of a lithium cobalt cell over it's discharge curve (3.7v) with it's peak voltage (4.2v).

i thought lithium-polymer used a totally different charge profile - i know my charger wont charge them. (Lii-500)

LiPo's are 4.2V max. and best charge chartacteristics are similar to what the TP4056 does. In model use our higher end chargers follow a similar strategy, gentle for over discharge, high current until mainly charged then tapering to 4.2 finish.

To the OP if you need a holder and 5 or 3V on your board take a look at these for an all in one Charger/BMS/Regulator. 18650 Module
