Looking for smd identification codebook
« on: November 23, 2013, 10:08:36 pm »
Hello,

I'm quite new about SMD parts and I'm looking for a codebook to help me identifying coded components.

Sometimes is hard to understand what is what. This sound scary to me "Unfortunately, each device code is not necessarily unique. For example a device coded 1A might be either a BC846A or a FMMT3904. Even the same manufacturer may use the same code for different devices!"  :wtf: is this true?

Do you have any good online manual link to share?

Many thanks in advance.

Um, would this not fit the bill?

I've had luck just using Google.  Just don't hesitate to use wildcards (xyza* returns anything starting with xyza, *xyza* yields anything containing it.),  site: (e.g. site:alldatasheets.com) which yields results from a specific URL.  I also like filetype: as in "filetype:pdf" as in "I don't want a supplier that can ship 30k units a day, just give me a freakin datasheet already!".

Full list of Google search operators.

Edit: BB Code formatting.  Talk about not being a software guy.

Terrible huh? And the latest smt parts are so tiny they don't have any identification at all.  :(

That site is the one I've linked in my post  :P  :)
Anyway thank you for your search suggestions!

Pretty terrible... without a service manual and schematic with silkscreen reference it's impossibile to identify that tiny stuff...

Wish manufacturers would micro-mark tiny components with a laser. Sure, you might need a microscope, but at least there would be something to go on.

Probably with laser engraving the components would cost much more.

That was my point.  You linked to a database that translates SMD codes into chip names and descriptions, then asked for a database that translates SMD codes into chip names and descriptions.  Are you just looking from something more comprehensive?

Oh, sorry, I didn't catch your point.

No, I'm looking for something that could be more updated (that website is still to 2006).

Ha, I didn't even notice how out of date it was.  Keeping on top of something like that would have to be damn near impossible though.  I might search around if I have some free time, hopefully there is a resource out there.

I appreciate your kindness but don't waste your free time for me: If a search is needed, I can do it on my own without boring you. My post was only if someone has  something "ready to eat" to share.  :)

A thread on Digikey lists a number of xref sites: http://www.digikey.com/techxchange/message/8522

That is a nice list Megatrommer, perhaps make a new post titled: "Sources for SMD codes" or something like that and ask an admin to make it a sticky post and let other users add to the list  :-+

What usually works for me is just Googling package type + marking, since those SMD marking sites have only older parts most of the time.

(On the other hand, Google starts blocking you and serving you CAPTCHAs if you do this too much >:()
