| TVS Diode for Surge Protector |

I'm looking at making a DIN mounted surge protector for 240VAC and I found a TVS diode that seems to fit the bill. Specifically, PTVS10-380C-TH which is rated for 10kA @ 8/20 μs with a Repetitive Standoff Voltage of 380V. It costs $139 which is only slightly higher than a comparable MOV based unit. The fact that there aren't existing commercially available TVS suppressors units available in this power range makes me a little nervous, especially when it seems so clear cut. Is this feasible? And should I be running an MOV in parallel? |

It is feasible but for a given capacity, a TVS is more expensive than a MOV simply due to their construction differences and materials and I think this explains the difference in popularity. The TVS has the advantage of not wearing out with repeated use while MOVs silently stop, um, MOVing. Before MOVs became popular, they used to make some really big TVS devices. I would not put a MOV in parallel but I might put a GDT in parallel. |

It's strange that I can't find *any* DIN modules using TVS diodes even when the parts are commercially available. |
