upping battery voltage on old pentax AF160 flash
« on: April 30, 2014, 07:39:13 pm »
I have an old pentax AF160 flash unit. It runs on 2x AA's. I was thinking what is i use a 1.2V NiMH and a 3.6V Li-Ion, that would give me 4.8V instead of 2.4V, the unit will have been designed for up to 3.5V I expect as it would have originally taken alkalines. Is it worth the risk ?

I'm hoping for faster recharge times.

only if you don't mind letting the magic smoke out of that smps power supply.  Think you could have a problem with inrush current along with the sudden much lower internal resistance of those new batteries.  You are doubling the input voltage, not to mention the current  to that device, don't think the engineers had that much tolerance in mind.

bearing in mind 2x alkalines are up to 3.3V I'm looking to go to 4.8V

It will cook. Just use 3 NimH cells and it will charge faster. The limit is the teeny tiny little transformer inside that has resistance you cannot do anything about. Higher voltage and they will melt the windings into a charred mass. If you want faster charging get a new flash unit.

I was contemplating as to whether the guts were made to work universally off 3 or 6 volts as many flashes took 4 AA's.
