USB 3 power and data setup
« on: June 04, 2019, 06:51:17 pm »
I need some suggestion/advice; I have an old phone using USB 3 (the smooth round plug that goes in either way) cable to charge and plug into a computer. Unfortunately it's one of those model where the battery isn't replacable and well, the battery is about as dead as a door nail (hard power down after just a few minutes of use after full charge).  I need to copy the data including the on-device-only encrypted content to a new phone, and to do that I just need to connect the two phones together using the same cable.  If it wasn't for the phone dying after a few minutes after plugging it in this way, that would be easy.

I can keep the phone running by plugging it into power - but that means I cannot connect it to the new one. So my question is, can I create a Y-Cable where I can provide power _and_ plug in the data side too connecting the two phones?  It looks like when there's a data connection, power isn't provided between the two devices - will providing power be a problem? Not sure how to find the answer to questions like this - so I'm seeking expert advice in regards to my options here.

Thanks.

It doesn't have any method for Wifi backup? I can't see this causing any problems, using 5V power.
The Note9 and maybe other phones have the ability to charge other devices over the USBC connector, but sounds like yours doesn't.
