Title: USB-C
Post by: Arek_R on May 31, 2020, 05:42:55 pm
Hi I'm trying to get USB-C going on my projects.
I would like to use low pinout version and prefereably one that has the footprint for Eagle provided.
Sparkfun uses one like that: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/15795 (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/15795) and files are available so I can extract the connector as either library or design block with all the needed resistors(to configure CC lines).
Unfortunatelly I was unable to find actual USB-C connector they're using, there is no actual manufacturer number provided.
When I asked on their forum they gave me this: A40-00118-A52-12
But when searched I get no results on google and octopart.
How do I find this connector?
All websites like RS/FARNELL/MOUSE/DIGIKEY have the parametric search engines not very well suited for such connectors.
Thanks.

I found the datasheet: https://www.bsc-elec.com/Uploads/pro/USB-C-Female-Connector.9.2.pdf (https://www.bsc-elec.com/Uploads/pro/USB-C-Female-Connector.9.2.pdf)

Someone in Reddit asked the same question a while back, there are some ali/ebay links in there. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskElectronics/comments/axo015/anyone_know_where_to_get_the_sparkfun_usbc/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskElectronics/comments/axo015/anyone_know_where_to_get_the_sparkfun_usbc/)

These USB connectors tend to be very generic, you can probably find one that fits the exact footprint pretty easily.

Edit: Quick look at LCSC gave me these that look identical (might want to triple check the actual footprint):

why not use a connector you can easily get and make a footprint for it?

Ebay link says does not ship to UK  |O
Yes it's generic but there are a lot of mechanical features that make those incompatible with each other.
I checked what ebay serves when I search for "16P SMD USB-3.1" and I found even friendlier USB-C with only 6 pins:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-lot-6-Pin-SMT-Socket-Connector-Micro-USB-Type-C-3-1-Female-Placement-SMD/264454493339?hash=item3d92b7549b:g:XLEAAOSwq~9dbV0y (https://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-lot-6-Pin-SMT-Socket-Connector-Micro-USB-Type-C-3-1-Female-Placement-SMD/264454493339?hash=item3d92b7549b:g:XLEAAOSwq~9dbV0y)
I might make footprint for this one myself but I need it to be available within UK, not going to wait 1 month for delivery from china.
Similar one from LCSC:

I didn't want to make the footprint myself because I couldn't find any connectors that didn't had full crazy 20pin types and they also have very unfriendly drawings diffiuclt for footprint creation or even don't have any recommended footprint dimensions - would need to figure it all out myself based on dimensions of the connector itself.
Example from RS, they don't even let you specify number of pins:

Edit: Whoops the nice 6 pin one I found doesn't contain D+/D-  :(

its all there in the datasheet linked (mechanical drawing) i made the footprint (Altium) the day i made the order based on the drawing. when the thing arrived, the footprint works the first time even on a diy pcb.

Edit: Whoops! yeah. the 6 pin is only for charging circuitry. you need the higher pin count for data transfer. maybe like the one JackJones linked. the drawing is also there.

Yeah only for charging applications.
Might use it for my TP5100(1S/2S 2A) charger board.

I guess I will need to make the layout myself and wait for arrival from LCSC with $10 delivery...

PS is there a way to export footprint from EasyEDA to Eagle?

EDIT: Ok it's happening:
