They're cheaply made but they work fine. All of the cheap erasers you can buy are pretty much the same thing, a CFL ballast and a small germicidal tube. I wouldn't worry about them catching fire, but I would also not leave something like that plugged in unattended, there's no reason to.

I have one of those. Been working for 8 years. No issues.
I glued a transparent plastic thumbtack (removed the pin  :) ) over the small hole in the drawer front.
It glows a nice blue when the lamp is on.
