VFD: Uneven brightness on lowest brightness

I installed a PCB with 2x4148 and 2x1ss33m diodes in series and 220Ohm axial resistors. The 2x4148 diodes are on the other side of the PCB. Cathodes are towards -Vee. I only had 2 of each diode. This reduced the display brightness when OFF, but not enough - perhaps I need 4x4148 diodes. I also added variable resistors across R3 and R4, and adjusted those until the display was very very faint - 2.6Vrms across the filament :). Not the best soldering but good enough. Thanks for the help! Photos attached.
