need help testing if a water pump it fulty
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:11:12 pm »
I think the water pump my be faulty in my washing machine (as its not draining)

I have removed the pump and done a continuity test on the two terminal and not getting a beep.

(as in this instructional video)

But, I'm getting a reading of 200ohm, so it not an open circuit?

Any advice would be really appreciated, before I start ordering parts.

DC resistance will be around 200r, so it probably will not show continuity, but resistance. Most common fault is that the coil is fine but the magnetic impeller inside is worn and sticks in the housing. The coil, magnet and impeller are available as a spare part on their own, and just are a few screws ( 6IIRC) to remove and replace on the housing. There is a o ring seal that you need that will come with it, lubricate the seal with some soapy water to get it to fit, and put together.

The kit cost me $15 last time I got one earlier this year, it fits a lot of washing machines.

It might turn with no load or dry but with a head of water it will stall. If there is no blockage and the filter is clear with no coins in the piping or the rubber lines the replacement pump is needed. They tend to fail at around the 10000 wash mark, or after around 5 years.

Are you sure it's the pump? It's starting to sound like the problem is elsewhere. Does the machine stop and basically wait indefinitely for the drum to empty, which never happens?
Anyway the things I would check include:
- continuity of wiring from the controller to the switch
- the water level switch, i.e. it may be incorrectly indicating that there is no water in the machine. Typically in a washing machine this consists of a diaphram switch triggered by a pressure hose connected to a low part of the plumbing, and is a fairly frequent point of failure.
- the controller. It may have a burned out contact or relay.
