See attached image for example. Does it mean the component is optional? Are those polarity protection diodes in the image?

I don't think they are diodes there are no cathode bars. I think they are just marked power I/Os..

In the LM2662 datasheet, in figures 14, 15 and 19–21 those are marked as currents.
People imagine AI as T1000. What we got so far is glorified T9.
