What happens when you put an electrolytic capacitor the wrong way?

Electrolytic capacitors used to have no safety vent, just a flat top. I used to blow up them up for fun with a line cord, until mom figured out.

I only fired 3-4 caps in 5 years. Last week I almost blew up 2 caps, 1 because I never checked it's voltage, the other I had backwards.
