What type of sim card should I use for my gps module?
« on: October 04, 2018, 08:53:23 am »
Hi.
I have recently purchased a GPS module from ebay. Here is the link: (Look for Item3)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIM808-GPS-GSM-GPRS-Bluetooth-Module-W-2-4G-Antenna-Replace-SIM908-For-Arduino/152866884024?hash=item23979389b8:m:mTrzeVdGfb0f2RpqQNWw5zA

I have no idea of what type of sim card I should use.
I am going to use the GPS module only for receiving its location.
I am located in Greece.

thanks

I doubt if we can help you. It depends on what your local telecom companies offer. Could be they have a super simple subscription plan. Or you buy a prepaid card.

the same sim card your handphone has? just make sure good reception telco where you will put it and the same form factor as the sim slot on the board. i have a unit like this with built in battery (now dead), it has manual of how you will setup the SIM, where to send message to in an event such as exceeding speed limit etc, SMS command to the unit etc. this one looks similar to mine but cheaper as yours, maybe it has the same manual? maybe you can find the manual for your unit. treat it just like a normal handphone with GPS reporting capability (mine has logging to sd card function at an interval) but automatic hang up when you/somebody try to call it.

there...

there...

there...

there...

and there...

what do you think of those?

I only going to use it to receive the its location.
how are you going to receive it other than telephone communication (SIM)? look carefully those pictures. you seems to not know what you are buying.

edit: right, if you are thinking of bluetooth or mcu communication, you dont need a SIM i guess. but why buy it in the first place? this one should suffice.

Yes, of course. You need to be able to connect to a public mobile network, and this is only possible if you insert a valid SIM card. And by "valid" I mean a card issued by your local telco, either as subscription or prepaid.
The only call you can make without SIM is emergency, usually 112 in the EU. But that's irrelevant here.

@Mechatrommer

I will connect it to a PIC micro. So I guess your suggestion for NEO-6M GPS Module is better.
I thought that in order to get my gps location I exclusively needed a gps module with a sim card.

Any other suggestions simmilar to NEO-6M GPS Module?

thanks

i bought something similar to NEO-6M GPS Module, i think it is, but havent use it in any of my project, i thought to put it in an rc airplane it will take sometime before i get back to the project. i havent bought anything else so i dont have any other suggestion. about your SIM-GPS module, i think there should be UART interface (as in the advert), maybe through the many pins header there but not sure never have those nor use that mode so you may investigate yourself.

these units are all GSM modem + GPS , they are best avoided.

get a standalone GPS and confirm it comes with more than just RX/TX pins, you want one that also has backup battery as this will make it much faster to lock.
