What university electrical engineering textbooks to order ?

I'm not in school, but I know most of the 1st/2nd year math for EE. So I'm looking for used textbooks. I found 3, +800 page, EE hardcover textbooks, from the 1990's for dirt cheap, they probably cover almost the exact same stuff, for 1st/2nd year topics. However reading reviews, they might not be much good for self-teaching, they don't have answers at the back, and the example problems are simple cases, and not enough explaining is done of where stuff actually comes from. They are

Maybe most university textbooks are like that ?? Plenty of graduate level non-textbooks at the library certainly fit that description, and they frustrate me. Unlike my 1st year university calculus, ODE, physics textbooks, which are great overall.

Any recommended titles, that's full of derivations, examples, and problem/solutions, and not $200 ?

Some textbooks are such a racket and scam, no wonder students can't afford anything.

Do you interested in some specific knowledge or just some students related talks?

You may find this book (free PDF) useful.  It is intended for use with MATLAB but will likely work Octave just as well:

I would think that for beginning circuit analysis, having a matrix solver would be useful.  It gets cumbersome trying to solve 5x5 matrices even if they are sparse.

At my university, we make quite a bit of the book Microelectronic Circuits by Sedra and Smith.

It's written at a very reasonable level and covers a wide range of topics.

The other books we use are pretty specific to their respective topics, such as control systems or fabrication.
