Where do you buy LiPo batteries and chargers from?
« on: August 25, 2013, 10:00:01 pm »
I want to start using LiPo batteries in my projects, but one of the first things that I noticed was difficult it is to find a place which sells them. I was searching on Dave's videos about LiPo batteries and in one of them he mentioned HobbyKing. Their product selection is great, but there's one little issue with it, they don't ship to Brazil via UPS, DHL, or FedEx, and sadly because of the time that standard packages wait for clearance here in Brazil is ~1 month, and express packages are only a day, express shipment is most of the time a must.

Does anyone have any suggestions of online stores that ship internationally via UPS, DHL, or FedEx?

Just about any Radio Control (RC) hobby store will carry Lipo batteries and chargers.  Check your local Yellow Pages under "Radio Control Hobbies" to find a store nearby.

Of course, finding an online source will definitely save you some money.  As Dave said, HobbyKing in China is one of the most famous but you might also try http://www.allerc.com, http://www.horizonhobby.com,  or http://www.hobby-lobby.com.  You can find numerous sources for Lipos and chargers through the RC hobby forums, such as RCGroups or RC Universe.  Try this link in RCGroups to see if a vendor is mentioned that ships to Brazil: http://www.rcgroups.com/batteries-and-chargers-129/.

Good luck!

Adafruit do some nice LiPo batteries and chargers for projects, they're not very large so it depends on what kind of project you are doing, if it just to power an MCU or other small circuitry it should do fine, but if it is for something beefier like a quadcopter these won't do. They ship worldwide via UPS I think! http://www.adafruit.com/products/259 <-- there is a charger
http://www.adafruit.com/products/328 <-- there is a battery

Hope this helps!

As a hobbyist RC aircraft pilot I can assure you I get nearly ALL of my LIPO's from hobbyking, it is probably going to be the cheapest for ok quality you are going to find, but as previously stated any RC hobby store will have them.  Personally for charging I use the Turnigy Accucel-6 which is a fantastic charger for smaller batteries (smaller being 4 cells or less, and less then around 5 amp hours in battery size).

If you need help regarding your batteries. I recommend visiting this site. http://www.redsradiocontrol.com/-desire-power--batteries-128-c.asp . It really helped me in replacing dead batts.
