Good genral purpose mosfets to have on hand?
« on: February 21, 2016, 08:45:50 am »
Hi everyone. So I've always been messing with eletronics as a hobby. I haven't really invested much, but would like to start getting more into the swing. So I'm making up some parts draws for random things that I think are useful to have on hand.

I'm in desperate need for a selection of N and P channel mosfets for projects. I was thinking of 3 categories I might use them.

High power, for things like big motor controllers. I've had some ideas in mind  utilising wind shield wiper motors. So I was looking at designing and building some big arse H-bridges for controlling them via arduino. High power <30V applications. Of course I can add more/less fets depending on what my load requirements are.

Medium size. Average size motors,  buzzers, led drivers. Just general power switching.

And small ones. For anything where little current is needed, perhaps like switching on a single led. Or logic switches.

Can anyone suggest options. Needing both N and P channel for the previous catagories. Thanks,  David.

Well, maybe my organizational skills are lacking, but I'd rather look through Mouser's database than try to figure out what I have.

I keep some low/logic level SOT 23 FETS around. I have a small stock of SOIC 8's which are useful in a pinch to move higher currents, because they can be stacked like legos to reduce the RDS on. Oh, I have a dozen odd other FETs rolling around, but hell would practically freezer over before I'd try to organize or keep them in stock. They're just leftovers I might dig through in a pinch.

For low currents the 2N7000 (TO-92) or the 2N7002 (SOT-23) are the typical jelly bean N Channel Mosfets. The P Channel complement of the 2N7000 is the BS250P.

My favorite cheap and most common in my local electronic store:
N Mosfet:
IRFZ44N (with large current capability)

IRF 7/8/9   4/5/6 0 (e.g IRF 740,IRF 840).

P type: never use one...

I have tins full of them and never had to buy any.  I get old UPS from town recycling.  I get about 20 a year.  With so much E waste out there do you really need to buy anything?

IRFZ44N (with large current capability)

It's funny, I was going to suggest this too, but I can't confidently say why... it just seems to be so commonly found all over the place. It's a very nice FET, don't get me wrong, but it seems odd to me that with such a huge number of FETs in IRF's catalogue, how does everyone reach the same conclusion??

try to look through the basics tutorials and see what parts people use in there diagrams and buy those parts
most of the time the parts will be cheap and available every where
I have been doing that for sometime now and I have decent amount of parts collection

of course it depends on your interest, in my case I was looking for jelly beans parts rather than specific application

I recommend this channel --> w2eaw
one of the few people that really understand what beginners want to know and learn, highly recommended  :-+
good luck
if what I have wrote doesn't make sense for you or you think there is something wrong, please correct me, I am still beginner and what I know probably less than what you know

For general purpose low power SMD MOSFETS the most popular in China are the SOT-23 AO3401 and AO3402 which you can get for under 2c in 100 quantity and have RDS(ON) of about 50 milliOhms
For high power I have IRFZ44 & IRF4905.
