Hi,
I would like to make a guitar signal level, audio switching circuit. I was thinking a 4066 or 4053, but I don't know how these might degrade the signal. Are they ok, or are there some specifically designed ICs that are better. thanks

Wow, I have just told someone else the same thing. :)
CMOS analog switches have non-linear resistance with signal swing. To minimize distortion, they have to be lightly loaded. Also keep the signal swing well within the bounds of the supply rail voltages.

4066 has been seen in some rather high-end audio gear.
When applied properly (powering, biasing, loading, etc.)

Is it a battery based application? A small signal mechanical relay may provide the most performance for an audio application. Ie, low resistance, no non-linearities, isolated signal and control circuits. In mains powered stuff it's the way to go.
