Why are Darlington transistors used to drive the 28BYJ-48

Hi everyone!
So I’ve been playing around with some cheap Chinese stepper motors (28BYJ-48) and I have no idea why they use a ULN2003 "stepper motor driver". It’s just a Darlington array.
Why not used mosfets?
Could someone shine a light on this?
capt bullshot:
Because the ULN2003 is old, dead cheap and has free wheeling diodes built-in.

In addition to that, for those steppers even the faked, even more cheaper ULNxxxx knockoffs are absolutely fine.
